It can sometimes be really difficult to find that work-life balance. We work so hard throughout the day that when the evening arrives we are just too tired to do anything other than sleep. In a sense we are using up all of our energy throughout the day that we end up running on an empty fuel level to carry on into the evening which means our personal life is suffering. At Debbie Burbage Recruitment we have thought of 5 simple tips to try and help balance work and life so that we can equate our energy a bit more throughout the day.
1. Ignore Emails After Work
We all have our emails on our phone and we automatically check them at continuous points of the day even after work hours. Stop yourself doing this and only check emails within work time. This will save so much stress in the evening, especially if you were to see an email which then keeps your mind racing throughout the night.
2. Have a Technology Detox
We are all using technology throughout the day, staring at computer screens, phone screens and dealing with clients over the telephone. Use your evenings to have a technology detox. Instead choose other things to do in the evening. Try a new routine such as a walk after work and once you are back home you could have a bath and change into something more comfortable. After you have freshened up, think about what you want to eat and spend some time cooking a nice meal to enjoy. By the end of the evening you will feel as though you have had a much more productive night than just getting back from work and sitting in front of the television.
3. Be More Active
During the summer months we experience lighter evenings. Make the most of the lighter nights, put on your joggers and just go for a walk or a run. Exercise can really help in de-stressing you. You don’t have to go far for exercise, either a local park or just a jog around the block can really help energise you. Meet up with a friend and go together so that you can socialise at the same time.
4. Leave Work in the Office
Leave all of your work behind in the office. There is no point worrying about work when you get home and don’t spend hours talking to your partner or your family about work as you are then bringing work home with you. Leave all your stresses behind in the office and use your time after work to enjoy time spent relaxing.
5. Organise Yourself & Take Control
Be more organised in your daily routine and spread your energy out evenly throughout the day. This way you can save some energy for the evening. Plan out each day the day before so in your final hour at work plan what you are going to do the next day. If any new jobs come in then these can be added to the bottom of the list and then work on these the following day.
What you need to realise is that it is your life. You need to try and spread your energy throughout the day so that you can enjoy life as well as work. If you are in a job that you feel is using up too much energy then maybe it is a time to take a step back and think about a career change. What you want in life is a job that you love doing, not one that tires you out so much that you are not actually getting a life.
